US trade mission to invest in Ghana’s power sector
Posted by on February 7, 2012 at 9:21 am in BusinessThe Energy Ministry will from Tuesday begin engaging a US trade mission expected to invest millions of dollars into Ghana’s power generation and distribution.
Ghana is one of four countries including Nigeria, hoping to benefit from this project which is largely expected to ensure regular power supply to businesses for improved economic development.
The US government has for the past few years supported Ghana with about $470 million with a huge chunk invested in the rural electrification access.
The Energy Minister, Dr. Joe Oteng Adjei confirmed to Citi Business News the investment plans of the US trade mission and its plans for Ghana’s power generation challenges.
Inaugurating the newly constituted governing board of the Electricity Company of Ghana last Friday, he challenged the board led by Mrs. Perpetual Darfuor to take immediate steps to flush out the perpetrators of corruption findings in the company.
In response, Mrs Darfuor said: “We hereby assure the honourable minster that we will discharge our duties with utmost diligence. Even from outside the board of ECG we are well aware of some of the challenges facing the Electricity Company.
“It is our hope that with collective guidance and contributions together with our supervising ministry, management and staff and all stakeholders, we will deal with the many challenges faced by the ECG, to becoming the efficient service provider in the country. ”
