..For getting pregnant

Four students between the ages of fourteen and seventeen of the St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic JHS in Kaleo in the Upper West Region have been expelled from school for getting pregnant.

The headmaster of the school, Bro. James, who also doubles as a parish priest of the town, told this paper that although these students were in their final year and were about sitting for their final exams, the action, taking together with the Parent and Teacher Association of the school was to set as a deterrent to other students.

According to him, some of the students often under the guise of poverty, engage in illicit sex which supposedly comes with its financial and emotional reward.

He narrated that the school had the same experience six years ago when six final year students became pregnant at a go.

Bro. James added that although the students were made to sit for their final exams, they still failed in all the subjects, adducing it to the difficulties they had in combining studies and pregnancy complications together.

Meanwhile, the Northern regional educational statistics for the past three years have given credence to the fact that most of the students who complete their Junior High School, often score zero percent in their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results, making it difficult for them to continue their schooling.
